Friday is trying to figure out a new and unexpected sensation: feeling lost. She has spent her life as a nomadic, isolated wanderer, constantly moving from place to place, never setting down roots or getting attached. But she always did so with her mother, who gave her a place to belong and stories that provided her an identity. Now her mom is dead, and Friday no longer knows who she is or where she belongs. Certainly not with her rich grandfather, who cut her mother out of his life. Maybe with her father, except he doesn't know Friday exists and she doesn't know who he is aside from a picture that might help her track him down. ----- Friday decides to follow that lead and, after living exclusively in small towns and the country, heads to the city to find her father. There, feeling adrift, she takes up with a "family" of homeless teens headed up by the charismatic, unpredictable Arden. Friday doesn't want to get attached, yet she finds herself drawn in by each of them in different ways. Soon she is more involved than she ever expected and heading towards a level of crazy and danger that she never bargained for. She might have just run out of freedom and options. ----- An engaging, skillfully written book that moves from drifting to gripping with surprising speed and enthrallment.

This is a tale of searching for your place in the world, your voice, your mother. It always kept me a little on edge, which I think was the author's goal.

Friday crisscrosses Australia with her mother, hearing tales of how her female ancestors have all died of drowning on auspicious Saturdays. Her mother has a knack with weaving tales, and Friday Brown is caught in her web...until her mother is diagnosed with cancer. Friday watches her mother waste away to nothing, until she dies quietly in the night, her lungs filled with fluid. Friday sets out on her own, heading into the city, looking for a father she never knew. Instead she finds a different family in a group of squatters lead by the fearless Arden. Friday doesn't feel comfortable in the city, but she wants to wrapped in a family once again and ignores the strange feeling she gets from Arden and the ragtag group. But she is pushed past her comfort zone when Arden burns down the squat and moves the "family" to an abandoned down in the middle of the outback. She swears she will leave the group, but before she can, something horrible happens.
