Van Sciver is a welcome new voice in the graphic novel world with this excellent debut novel. I'm from Illinois, so Lincoln is near and dear to my heart, but Van Sciver does a great job of illuminating the complexity and vulnerability of the man who became one of America's strongest leaders. One thing-- moreso than other historical graphic novels, this one is formatted like a movie, with distinct episodes, obvious cut panels with a narrator, and other designed panels. These flourishes add to the story rather than distracting from it, and show how versatile graphic novels are as a medium.

Revelatory storytelling resurrects Lincoln the hesitant, uncertain, vulnerable man, while giving us glimpses of the profound, ironic, steadfast exemplar he would become. It's hard to believe a historical tale with such a well-known outcome could be described as pulse-pounding, but this is the real deal.
