Elysia is cloned from a dead girl and sold to a wealthy family on a luxury island. She supposedly cannot feel or think for herself, but she is a Beta, and she soon discovers she has a whole self yet to be explored.

The more I read this book, the less I enjoyed it. I disliked that some characters were talking like it was the 19th century, yet others were using language that's even outdated now - saying things like "Whoa" and "Totally." There were a few pop culture references - such as Mary Poppins, the Ramones, the Macarena - that, considering this is a book is set hundreds of years in the future (one would assume, since all of the continents came together again and the polar ice caps are completely melted), seem extremely out of place. Why would these people be referencing or experiencing these things that nobody in their time is going to care about? You would think they'd have other, much more up-to-date things to reference from their time, but apparently not. The premise was good, but the book itself fell short of expectations.

Violence: a little bit graphic when it describes the defective clones in the infirmary

There is no such thing as safety. Especially for a clone. Who's now been made some human's consort.
