Ruby is a victim of a childhood disease that turns her into a dangerous telepath. Existing in a government camp for other "freaks" she escapes from camp. Meeting Jake, Chubs and Zu bring a whole new meaning as she begins to care about these new friends. But, between the "league" and the "slip kid" its hard to know who to trust. Quite a good book for anyone who enjoyed "Hunger Games" or "Divergent."

I think this is one of the best books ever. I loved the writing, loved the characters, and I loved the idea. At first it's confusing, same with Never Fade, but if you push through everything makes sense. I got so absolutely attached I found myself laughing and crying at every turn. Because this isn't a review, but a comment, I won't go into too much depth. But, I loved this book, so much it actually hurts. Ugh. So good, and well planned. And because it's not as popular as, per say, Divergent, it's kinda like our little secret. I'm dying for the next book. I give it fifty stars!!! Okay fine. Fifty million!

This was really good! Lots of angst, very emotionally-engaging. So glad book 2 is already in transit ^_^

A fascinating story. Not a lot happens (which is frustrating because there is so much I want to know!) but the characters just come alive and are so likeable. Ruby, Chubs, Lee...I just want to know what happened/happens to everyone! The ending was rough (cliff-hangers and sad stuff = heartbreak). It's going to be hard waiting for book #2 to come out!

It's strange to say--and hard to say in a way that makes it sound like the positive comment that it is--that this book is both action-packed, suspenseful, and gripping and a character-focused set-up for the rest of the series that really doesn't advance the plot all that far despite its nearly 500 pages. --- This book is clearly an introduction to a larger story, yet is complex and deep enough that it doesn't feel lacking. It's one of those that starts in the middle of a strange set of circumstances that require explanation, and the history of events that have shaped the characters and their setting are gradually revealed as they are propelled forward through constant life-and-death situations. I was left wanting more, but in a good way.

The darkest minds hide behind the most unlikely faces.

“So help me God,” I said slowly, clearly, when Cate looked up at me. “If you go back on your word, I will tear you apart. And I won’t stop, not ever, until I’ve destroyed your life and the lives of every single person in this organization. Believe me, you may not always keep your promises, but I do.”

“You can destroy a factory, and they'll build another. But once you destroy a life, that's it. You never get that person back.”

“No spinning," I said. I wasn't sure my head or heart could take it. Up close, he was so warm, and so beautiful. I was already dizzy enough.

“We have no idea, but its not like we're going to win any awards for normalcy anytime soon. So you get into people's heads? The two of us can throw people around like toys. Zu once blew up an AC unit, and all she did was walk by it.”

“Try to imagine where we'd be without you, darlin', and then maybe you'll see just how lucky we got.”

“But inside or out, I was alone, and I was beginning to wonder if I always had been, if I always would be.”

“But there was another, secret Ruby. This one was as thin as a wisp of air, and had struggled for so long just to be. This was the one that Liam carried with him, without knowing. The one that would ride in his back pocket, whisper words of encouragement, tell him he was born to chase the light.”

“If there was one good thing that came out of all this, it was that I got to meet you. I would go through it all again - I would, as long as it meant I'd met you.”

“We want you. We wanted you yesterday, we want you today and we'll want you tomorrow. There's nothing you could do to change that.”
